Who is affected by macular degeneration

The number of people who have age-related macular degeneration (AMD) increases with age. 1

  • Less than 10% of people aged 43 to 54 have AMD.
  • After age 75, up to 46% of people may have some form of it.

AMD occurs slightly more often in women than in men. People with light skin are more likely to develop macular degeneration than others. The condition is rare in blacks.
